Seed to Table undertakes changes

As the seasons change from fall harvest to winter cold, local farm and nonprofit Seed to Table (STT) is undergoing changes of its own. Its top leadership position has transitioned.

Though 2024 has been a strong year for its three core programs - education, feeding local people, and Sisters Farmers Market - the organization is addressing gaps in fundraising revenue, unrelated to the leadership transition.

Seed to Table recently announced that its Founder and Farm Director Audrey Tehan will once again step into the position of executive director, this time on an interim basis. Holly Haddad has moved on from the position.

A record-breaking season for Sisters Farmers Market

Playing host to a record-breaking number of visitors, accepting a range of new vendors, and trying out expansions of its physical footprint, Sisters Farmers Market just closed out its biggest season yet.

"We had a great season," market manager Willa Bauman enthused. The final market, October 27, marked the latest time of year Sisters Farmers Market has ever been open.

"The last day was really great. We got blue skies right at 10 o'clock after a rainy morning. It was a nice crisp fall day," Bauman said.

Since nonprofit Seed to Table (STT) brought the market under its wing in 2020, the market has grown consistently. The 2024 season brought an ambitious expansion with new opportunities for programming and vendors-not to mention more shoppers than ever.

Burying underwear - for science

Sisters fifth-graders - including Bailey Moffat - did a fun science project on decomposition at Seed to Table Farm.

One of the funniest and most effective ways of showing what happens in healthy soil involves burying a new pair of white cotton undies and then six months later digging them up to see how they're transformed by decomposers. The results astonished students and teachers alike when Ms. Guthrie's fifth-grade class was on one of their Seed to Table farm field trips.

‘Know Gardens’ this April with Deschutes Public Library; several programs bloom throughout the month

Are you dreaming of a backyard bounty or looking to garden more sustainably?

You can join the Deschutes Public Library as they sew, dig, and harvest for a variety of “Know Gardens” events in April.

"I think that instilling an appreciation for all things that grow is a really important lesson for young people," event supervisor Liz Goodrich said Monday, "and that getting your hands dirty and watching something grow from the fruits of your labors is so rewarding for both kids and adults. So that's why the library is happy to offer this series."

…Deschutes Public Library is partnering with local artists, experts and community organizations to host the learning series.

One is Seed to Table, a nonprofit education farm based in Sisters that aims to increase the health of the community by increasing access to local grown foods.

Locals sign up for sustainably grown produce

As spring harvest approaches, Cora Kirby (left) and her mother Elizabeth discuss their favorite vegetables from Seed to Table farm.

Elizabeth Kirby and her daughter Cora sat in a coffeehouse on a sunny day this week, coloring pictures and talking about veggies. Which were their favorites from Seed to Table farm in recent years? Mom remembered "green kale and purplish-red kale. We made kale chips out of them."  Cucumbers with rice vinegar were the winner for Cora, a four-year-old who recently started attending SPRD preschool.

"I think she likes those because when I was pregnant with her, I ate tons of pickles," explained Kirby. "She likes pickled beets, too, and pickled radishes."

"And pickled coffee," added Cora.

Seed to Table isn't known for pickled coffee. It is known, however, for its produce share, providing local, sustainably grown veggies to folks in Sisters Country. Signups are now available for the 2024 season.

Seed to Table expanding its capacity

The Seed to Table Farm team is looking forward to the year ahead,

especially after the farm was buried under deep snow and ice these past few weeks. Seed to Table’s 10th anniversary brought an abundance of firsts, including record-breaking harvests feeding hundreds of Central Oregonians weekly and the greatest community engagement yet across Sisters Farmers Market visitors, produce share members, and student field trips. With a strong foundation beneath them, they’re looking ahead to another fantastic year.

On January 4, Holly Haddad began her new position as executive director, working closely with Founder and now Farm Director Audrey Tehan. With the Board and Tehan’s guidance, Haddad is digging into the organization’s culture, relationships, past accomplishments, and future goals. Haddad’s first days on the job were spent with Program Director, Hannah Joseph helping students explore flavors of curry made with carrots and squash. The winter cooking classes are some of Seed to Table’s newest extensions into school programming for more year-round programming.

Sisters Country’s Seed to Table invites new donors during year-end matching campaign

Thanks to a generous donor, any donations from first-time donors will be matched. They have a goal to bring in 100 new donors with gifts of any size. Seed to Table’s program supports many aspects of life in Sisters Country. Celebrating their tenth anniversary serving the community, the reach of S2T has grown drastically, serving thousands each year and growing nearly 100,000 pounds of fresh produce.

…Teaching kids through hands-on activities is engaging for her. "There's so many directions we can go, whether it's about trying something new or getting comfortable in the outdoors and welcoming all the critters, not being scared of the bees or the worms. Or learning about the science of plants, or about conservation and ecology."

Lettuce, stewardship, and Highland cattle are part of the on-farm experience for LifeSkills students at Seed to Table.

Teachers Berit Dart at Sisters Middle School and Josh Nordell at Sisters High bring youth from both schools together for various activities, including Seed to Table field trips. "We're giving kids an opportunity, after they've already spent a good chunk of their day being in a classroom-doing some pretty high-demand, sometimes low-reward things-to come out and work on some vocational skills," Dart explained. He values that the program allows students to experience "being outside, being around some really awesome people."

Early on, Barb Schulz knew science would be a part of her life. At 80 years old, she’s still active, inquisitive, and happy to share what she’s learned.

…“The Science Club helped Audrey Tehan get started,” she said. “When Audrey came to the Science Club and did a presentation, she told us she needed a motorized hand tiller. I told her what she was doing was right down my alley and I’d help her one day per week. That was 2013. Until COVID hit I spent every Wednesday with the crew. In 2018 S2T became a nonprofit. Audrey asked me to be on the board. Since then, it’s grown like crazy. I’ve been on the board the whole time but will be stepping down this year. Now I can get back to helping Audrey digging in the dirt. I’ll be there when they need help. Maybe harvesting on Tuesdays or tying up trellises for the beans.”
